A fallen tree near Collooney, Ireland, has uprooted a 1,000-year-old skeleton – and a medieval murder mystery along with it.
According to CNN, the 215-year-old tree fell "sometime before May." Tangled in its roots was a skeleton dating back to sometime between 1030 and 1200.
Researchers believe the 17- to 20-year-old man died violently because his remains showed evidence of stab wounds. He was on his back with his head toward the west, indicating a Christian burial.
"It could be a local conflict/battle or personal dispute that resulted in his death," Marion Dowd of Sligo-Leitrim Archaeological Services told CNN.
The upper portion of the skeleton under excavation, trapped in the root matrix of the collapsed beech tree.
