A couple from Fort Pierce was arrested after hunting a 7-foot alligator without a permit, our news partners at WPTV News Channel 5 report.
A Facebook picture posted in April shows the alligator tied up to a picnic table. When investigators received pictures of Chasity Barrett and Guy Bennett holding the gator, the couple was arrested.
It is unknown how Barrett and Bennett killed the animal, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. But, neighbors say the couple may have decapitated it.
In an arrest affidavit, a friend told authorities that Bennett said of the gator: “I’m going to saw his head off. He won’t live long.”
FWC spokeswoman, Liz Barraco, said to WPTV that the alligator’s skull was found buried in Bennett’s yard in Ridgecrest Trailer Park.
“It’s wrong that they would torture any kind of animal," neighbor Charles Prince said to WPTV. "I guess there’s just some people. You can’t control how people are going to act and stuff.”
