Two tacos destined for the trash can and selling for 99 cents cost a Jack in the Box employee his job.

Alex Mesta, 19, admits he has given the customer free tacos and other items in the past because he is a regular and a military veteran, according to Fox News.

Mesta would see the man a few times a week because they both worked overnight shifts, according to KERO.

Mesta estimates the value of the coffee and tacos is less than $4, according to KERO.

Restaurant officials were reviewing the security footage to make sure employees followed company procedures during a 15-minute time frame, Mesta told KERO.

The restaurant said Mesta was fired for more than this incident.

"We too are grateful to our veterans and to the men and women currently serving in the armed forces. Regarding this incident, while it would not be appropriate to provide complete details on an internal disciplinary issue, our actions in this case were not based on just one incident and had nothing to do with the guest's military experience.

Mesta was fired for "mishandling funds," according to KERO.

"I know what I did wasn't right to them," Mesta told KERO. "But to me it felt right."
