A doctor in Metairie, Louisiana, in Jefferson Parish was shot dead by an elderly man who walked into his office while the doctor was with a patient.

NOLA.com reported that the shooter then went to a nearby Wendy's restaurant and shot and killed himself in front of employees and customers.

Col. John Fortunato, a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, said an elderly white male walked into the office of Dr. Elbert Goodier III, 75, near East Jefferson Hospital around 2 p.m.

The man went where Goodier, a urologist, was with a patient and fired one shot in his head.

"(The shooter) immediately fled the office. A number of witnesses described him as he left the building…with the officers we had in the area," Fortunato said. "They followed him to the Wendy's. Once the officer made eye contact with the gentleman, it appeared as though he had taken the handgun and  placed it in his mouth and took his own life."

The shooter's body was inside the restaurant for more than an hour after the incident.

WWL reported that Fortunato said it is not known if the man knew Goodier.

"This is a tragic loss for EJGH and our entire community," said Dr. Mark Peters, East Jefferson chief executive officer. "Dr. Goodier was respected and beloved by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our hearts and sympathies go out to his family, his friends, his staff and all who knew him. ... We, as a hospital and community, now mourn the loss of a generous and gracious man."

The Advocate reported that Goodier left behind his wife, Catherine Goodier; son, Michael Goodier, and two daughters, Christine Ross and Gina Goodier.
