After legislative action this week, a proposal to rename the bridge is set to be signed by Mass. Gov. Charlie Baker.

The House of Representatives approved a budget Thursday that included the renaming of the Brookline Avenue Bridge to the David Ortiz (Big Papi) Bridge.

The bridge spans the Massachusetts Turnpike between Landsdowne Street and Newbury Street and is heavily trafficked by fans on game days.

Supporters of the move say it's meant to honor Ortiz's contributions not only to the Red Sox, but also to the rest of the city.

Ortiz has been known for his charitable work on behalf of children in New England and his native Dominican Republic, and his response to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing was significant in helping the city heal.
