Sifting for 9/11 victims begins

The New York City medical examiner’s office says it has started sifting construction debris from the World Trade Center site in an effort to find any human remains from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The work began Monday. It’s expected to continue for about 10 weeks. Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway said in a memo Friday that DNA testing will continue until every possible identification can be made. About 2,750 people died at the World Trade Center in the 2001 attacks. So far, 1,634 people have been identified.

AFGHANISTAN

Teenager fatally stabs U.S. soldier

An Afghan teenager fatally stabbed an American soldier in the neck as he played with children in eastern Afghanistan, officials said Monday. Sgt. Michael Cable, 26, of Philpot, Ky., was killed Wednesday after the soldiers had secured an area for a meeting of U.S. and Afghan officials in a province near the volatile border with Pakistan. The attacker was thought to be about 16 years old. He escaped so his age couldn’t be verified, officials said. Cable’s body was scheduled to return to Owensboro on Thursday.

Man jailed in father’s slaying

A man accused of killing his father at a church on Easter Sunday appeared Monday in Ashtabula Municipal Court. Police said Reshad Riddle, 28, went to the church and shot Richard Riddle, 53, once with a handgun. Witnesses to the Easter service shooting said they feared many might be killed as the victim’s son approached the pulpit, waving the gun and yelling about God and Allah. During Monday’s hearing, Riddle made rambling comments about God and asked to be treated fairly. The judge appointed a public defender, and the prosecutor asked for $1 million bail. Ashtabula Police Chief Robert Stell said Riddle offered no motive for the shooting.

High-rise death linked to graffiti

A man found dead hanging by a rope off an 18-story Sacramento high-rise appears to have been a graffiti tagger, Sacramento police said Monday. Fire Battalion Chief Marc Bentovoja said the man appeared to have died accidentally of asphyxiation after he became entangled in a harness fashioned from the ropes as he lowered himself down the east side of the office building. Investigators found a can of spray paint and a tool for etching glass on the part of a balcony where the ropes were anchored, police said. It was unclear how long the body had been hanging four floors from the top of the nearly 240-foot building.

Tighter school segregation rules ordered

Gaza’s Hamas-controlled parliament has passed a law requiring separate classes for boys and girls in public and private schools from the fourth grade. Boys and girls now are separated in grade seven in public schools, and private schools can set their own rules. The education law, announced Monday, also bars male teachers from teaching in girls’ schools. The rules will go into effect at the start of the new school year in September.
