A toddler died outside his Miami County, Ohio, home Sunday evening after a family member driving a pickup truck drove over him, according to sheriff's deputies.

The child was identified by the Miami County Sheriff's Office as 23-month-old Marcus Bowers.

An unidentified family member struck Marcus around 4:30 p.m. outside his home on the 9300 block of Sodom-Ballou Road in Brown Township.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to the Bowers family and friends for their loss," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The sheriff's office would not comment on how the driver, an adult, was related to the child.

"Preliminary investigation indicates that a relative was going to back out of the drive to leave and did not see the 2-year-old and struck the child," said Chief Deputy Dave Duchak, of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office.

The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was taken to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office in Dayton, according to deputies.

"It’s a terrible, terrible tragedy and obviously the family is going through a lot," Duchak said.

Many cars of family members and friends were seen driving to the large, rural property off Ohio 589, and Miami County victim advocates also arrived to offer support, Duchak said.

The death, which Duchak said appears to be an accident, remains under investigation.

CareFlight initially was requested but was later canceled.
