Boy struck by lightning while fishing at Florida beach

An 11-year-old boy is recovering after a bolt of lightning hit him while he was fishing with his father in Daytona Beach Shores Tuesday.

Bowen Tyre is being treated at Arnold Palmer Hospital. He and his family were visiting from Pierce County when the incident happened.

According to police, Tyre was fishing in knee-deep water with his father when he was struck.

Witnesses said that skies appeared clear when the lightning struck. They said storms looked like they were several miles away.

LJ Kuzmovich, a surf instructor who was nearby, jumped into action and performed CPR on the child.

"It's one of those fight or flight, you know? I know what to do. So alright, it's time to help this little guy out," Kuzmovich said. "He didn't have a pulse, and we started our compressions and then he started spitting up and we were able to roll him over."

Posts on a Facebook page that his family has set up have been full of prayers and messages of support for Tyre. The last update posted said doctors were planning on taking him off sedation and will try to wake him up.
