The Baltimore Sun reported that Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said two Baltimore Police officers in East Baltimore said the boy was carrying a replica of a semi-automatic weapon.

"(I have) no reason to believe that these officers acted inappropriately in any way," Davis said.

Davis said in a news conference on Periscope that after police officers, who were in plain clothes, identified themselves as police, the boy ran "a good 150-plus yards," never dropping the replica.

He said the replica was a "dead-on ringer" for a Beretta 92 FS semi-automatic pistol.

Police said the boy's injuries were non-fatal and that he will survive. He was not sure how many times the boy was shot, but told reporters that he was shot in his lower extremities.he

The boy's mother told police that her son left their home with "a BB gun in his hand," police said.

The mother was not arrested.

WJZ reported that the incident happened around 4 p.m. Wednesday.

"Any time a police officer discharges his or her firearm at another person -- whether it strikes the person or not -- it always starts as a criminal investigation," Davis said. "We work in close partnership with the state attorney's office. Once that criminal investigation concludes, then there is an administrative investigation."

Davis said that once more information is known, the department will follow up with a conference at police headquarters.
