It sounds like something out of a horror movie, but one Minnesota family discovered in a frightening way that baby monitors can be hacked.

The parents didn't realize that the device had been hacked until it started playing music, CBS Minnesota reports. Further investigation found that the IP address of the monitor had been registered somewhere overseas.

The parents discovered that images of their baby captured by the monitor had been posted on a website that displays hacked cameras from around the world.

As with most Internet-capable devices, using a strong password and changing it frequently is recommended to prevent an electronic invasion of privacy via a baby monitor.

This is not the first time that a baby monitor has been hacked. Experts say it is a growing crime. In 2014, a baby monitor was hacked and the hacker talked to the babysitter while watching her every move.
