Austin police confirmed Sunday evening that a 17-year veteran of the department critically injured Thursday in one of the worst officer-involved collisions they have seen in recent years has died.
Amir Abdul-Khaliq, a 46-year-old former Marine and father of five, was rushed to University Medical Center Brackenridge shortly after the crash around 11:15 a.m. where he had been escorting a funeral procession.
Police said a woman, identified as 51-year-old Ana Marie Prado, pulled out in front of him during a gap in the procession, causing the officer to slam into her vehicle.
Austin police Chief Art Acevedo said she was cited for failing to yield the right of way to an emergency vehicle, a Class C misdemeanor. On Friday, Acevedo said he would push for additional charges if Abdul-Khaliq died of his injuries.
“Officer Abdul-Khaliq was an individual that we all loved and served as a great role model for his children, his peers and our community,” the department said in a statement Sunday.
Cmdr. Art Fortune with the Police Department’s Highway Enforcement Command said the department has handled at least a dozen motorcycle crashes involving officers in the past two years, but none had been as serious as Thursday’s incident.
Mohamed-Umer Esmail, imam of the Nueces Mosque, described Abdul-Khaliq as a person of faith, integrity and honesty.
