Emergency crews in New York worked Thursday morning to free 17 miners trapped in a malfunctioning elevator hundreds of feet underground.
All 17 miners have been rescued, according to the Ithaca Journal.
The miners have been stuck at the Cargill Salt Mine in Lansing since 10:20 p.m., according to the Ithaca Fire Department. Firefighters said they were in an elevator 775 down an access shaft, however, the Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response said the miners were stuck 800-900 feet down.
They were just starting their shifts at the facility when they became stuck, Cargill spokesman Mark Klein told WHCU. They were not injured. Emergency responders have been communicating with them and lowerign down food and other supplies, the radio station reported.
Around 4 a.m., the department sent a technical rescue team to assist the Lansing Fire Department and Cargill Salt Mine staff. Around 5 a.m., a crane headed to the scene to assist from nearby Auburn, the Ithaca Fire Department said.
