One police officer was killed and another hurt early Sunday outside a bar in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, multiple local news outlets reported.

Update 10:50 a.m. EST Jan. 13: Sgt. Wytasha Carter has been identified by Birmingham police as the officer killed in the shooting.

According to Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith, the officers were attempting to detain burglary suspects about 2 a.m. CST when one suspect began shooting, WBRC reported. One officer, a police sergeant, was shot and killed, while the other was critically wounded and hospitalized, according to WVTM.

Birmingham Police Chief Patrick Smith said one suspect, who also was injured, is being treated at the hospital. The other suspect is in police custody, he said.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the officers or suspects.
