Kelly Beier-Hodo and her boyfriend, Matthew Hiatt, both of Hayden, were at Smith Lake Marina and Resort in Cullman County when they were injured, the television station reported. The couple had taken Beier-Hodo's daughter, Addy, to the northern Alabama lake for a day of relaxation.

As they were packing up to leave, lightning flashed and struck the two barefoot adults, WBMA reported.

“Lightning struck me and then came out of my side and struck him and apparently we both fell at the same time but Addy did not,” Beier-Hodo told the television station.

Paramedics were nearby because of a separate issue at the lake and were able to treat the couple immediately, WBMA reported.

Breier-Hodo said she woke up July 21 and said she was glad to be alive.

“All the nurses have (come) in, different nurses saying, 'I just wanted to meet you, I’m not even your nurse but I’ve never met anybody who comes back from something like that,'” Breier Hodo said.

Breier Hodo was released from an area hospital Friday, WBMA reported. Hiatt sustained minor injuries and was released from an area hospital hours after he was struck, according to the television station.
