Republican Sen. Rand Paul suspended his presidential campaign Wednesday. His campaign spokeswoman, Eleanor May, confirmed the news to The Associated Press. A statement from Paul was posted on Twitter.
A video thanking supporters was posted on Paul's Twitter account.
The senator from Kentucky entered the election hoping to capture the youth and anti-establishment votes. Despite having some bright moments at debates, Paul performed poorly in polls and only earned 4 percent of the vote in the Iowa caucuses.
Paul will instead focus his attention on running for another term in the Senate. Paul is a popular figure among Libertarians and tea party supporters.
Paul, who is also an ophthalmologist, is the son of former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul of Texas.
