Charles Evers, the older brother of civil rights activist Medgar Evers, is dead at age 97.

The Rankin County, Mississippi, Coroner’s Office confirmed Evers’ death to WLBT. He died surrounded by family in Brandon on Wednesday morning.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves tweeted his condolences.

According to the Mississippi Civil Rights Project, Charles introduced his brother to the U.S. civil rights movement.

In 1969, Evers was elected the mayor of Fayette, Mississippi, the Magnolia State’s first Black mayor since Reconstruction.

Evers unsuccessfully ran for governor and senator, and then hosted a popular radio show after his political career ended.
