Matthews, who passed away Monday, spent more than 20 years with the Monroe Police Department.
“It is with heavy hearts the city [of] Monroe mourns the death of Captain Mike Matthews,” Mayor John Howard said in a Facebook post.
“If you knew Mike, you saw the finest example of a gentleman,” the post reads.
Matthews was the first school resource officer at Monroe Area High School and a supporter of its sports teams, according to the Walton Tribune.
Two weeks ago, the Monroe Police Department set up a GoFundMe to help Matthews as he battled his illness.
Matthews had been in need of a kidney transplant.
"You're not a burden. Your people love you and want to help."
