Monday is going to be a hot one for metro Atlanta.

The city is starting out warm and humid with lows in the 70s, and Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said the day is only going to get stickier from here. High humidity will be an aggravating factor when temperatures reach their peaks Monday afternoon, she said.

“We are headed for a hot and steamy day, all the way up into the lower to mid-90s for afternoon highs,” Deon said. “And feeling even hotter, more like mid- to upper 90s.”

A 20% chance of a popup shower or storm could bring some relief from the heat, but not all neighborhoods will get rain Monday, according to Channel 2. Deon expects a mostly sunny sky before clouds start to build in this afternoon.

“A few spotty showers popping up as early as 1 p.m. this afternoon,” she said. “No widespread rain, but the rain and storms we do get could put down some heavy rainfall.”

Deon said drier air moving in Tuesday will force out some of the humidity and clear out the clouds. A projected high of 89 Tuesday will still be hot, but it will feel more comfortable. Highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s are in the forecast all week, according to Channel 2.

“Dry air will be with us over the next several days throughout the work week, and then by the time we get into the weekend, that’s when we’ll see the showers and storms move back in,” she said.

There are big traffic delays all across metro Atlanta on Monday morning after police activity, crashes and construction on multiple interstates, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

All northbound lanes of I-85 have been shut down leaving Midtown Atlanta since about 5 a.m. while police conduct an investigation. Traffic is blocked before the Ga. 400 split, the Traffic Center reported.

“No word from authorities as to when they will be able to open the interstate,” traffic reporter Mark Arum said. “Big delays leaving Midtown at 17th Street.”

Drivers are encouraged to use the Buford-Spring Connector, Piedmont Road or Peachtree Road to get around the backups.

A crash was to blame for delays on I-75 North in Clayton County. Two right lanes are blocked at Tara Boulevard at 6:30 a.m., according to the Traffic Center.

And in Henry County, construction was blocking two southbound lanes of I-75 at Ga. 138. Drivers can U.S. 19/41 to avoid the delays out of Stockbridge, the Traffic Center reported.
