After a week of 90-degree heat, temperatures have once again slipped below average in North Georgia.
Atlanta is expected to reach the upper 80s under a mostly cloudy sky Monday as thousands of metro Atlanta students head back to school. According to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan, there should be very few showers to dodge.
“It’s a mainly dry forecast for us today,” he said. “You can leave those umbrellas at home today, but tomorrow and Wednesday, better chances for showers and storms.”
The region has a passing cold front to thank for the lack of precipitation Monday. The front slipped further south overnight, Monahan said, leaving North Georgia cloudier but drier.
The second half of the day will have the better shot at a shower, Monahan said. A 20% chance of showers and storms increases to 40% Tuesday, which will be the wettest day of the week, he said. Rain chances fall back to 30% Wednesday.
Monahan said Monday will still be pretty muggy. Atlanta is warm in the mid-70s to start the day, and a projected high of 87 degrees falls just below the average of 90.
The rain will help keep North Georgia even cooler Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs in the low 80s are in the forecast both days, according to Channel 2.

Expect more congestion on the roads this week as students return to class, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Eleven more districts head back to school Monday, and another nine start Tuesday.
Multiple crashes have been reported, but there are no major delays on the interstates as the Monday morning commute gets underway, the Traffic Center reported. A crash on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive could complicate things for Atlanta commuters on the Westside, however.
The crash is blocking multiple lanes between Fairfield Place and Florida Avenue, but it is not impacting the ride on I-20, the Traffic Center reported.
