The Atlantic hurricane season is still going strong with its 30th named storm approaching landfall, but North Georgia is likely to be spared from any tropical effects this week.
Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said high pressure will keep weather cool and dry locally. There is no chance of rain through Friday, according to Channel 2.
“We’ve got a quiet week and a cool week of weather ahead, and that starts today,” Monahan said Monday morning.
Temperatures are in the 30s and 40s early Monday, a marked change from the warm mornings in the 60s from last week. Monahan said lots of sun in the forecast will help North Georgia to warm up quickly, reaching the 60s by lunchtime.
“It’s going to be cool this morning, but look at all the sun we’ve got for you,” he said. “It should be a beautiful afternoon.”
Atlanta’s projected high is 63 degrees, according to Channel 2.
Monahan said the weather in North Georgia is “a completely different story” than the reality for Central America, which is bracing for a rapidly intensifying Hurricane Iota. Unlike Eta, which turned and made a path toward Florida, Iota is expected to stay well to the south, according to the latest storm track projections.
Not even tropical moisture is expected to reach North Georgia.
“We’re going to have a big strong high camp out right along the coast, and that’s going to keep things really dry,” Monahan said.
While there should be minimal weather impacts Monday, a crash on the southeast Perimeter has the potential to cause trouble for much of the morning drive, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Traffic reporter Mark Arum said a vehicle wrecked into the guardrail on I-285 East at Flat Shoals Road. Multiple lanes were blocked at 6 a.m., causing about two miles of backups.
“It’s a really bad crash,” Arum said. “I expect the investigation to be lengthy on the outer loop in DeKalb County.”
In the northern part of the county, a fallen tree was blocking another busy road. Brookhaven police are advising drivers to avoid North Druid Hills Road at East Roxboro Road until the tree is cleared.
