After a chilly and dry week, this work week will start with a few clouds

You’ll want to dress in layers if you plan on being out and about Monday, according to the latest forecast.

The day will get off to a chilly start, but more comfortable temperatures are on the way for the afternoon, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

Right now, it’s 34 degrees in Atlanta. However, areas outside the Perimeter are even colder, Nitz said.

While Canton is at a chilly 33 degrees, temps are 30 degrees in Athens and Calhoun, 29 degrees in Carrollton and 27 degrees in Griffin and LaGrange, Channel 2 reported.

“It’s down below freezing in the mountains,” Nitz said. “For the rest of us, although it’s in the 30s, it’s up above freezing, so it’s warmer than it has been in recent days.”

According to Channel 2, you’ll be able to pull off your big coat going into the afternoon.

“I don’t think you’re going to need the hat and gloves unless you’re going to be out for a long time,” Nitz said.

Temps are expected to rise to 54 degrees by 2 p.m. and the day’s high of 56 degrees by 4 p.m. That’s slightly above the average high of 52 for this time of year, according to Nitz.

It will feel comfortable with mostly clear skies overhead and dry conditions expected throughout the day. There are just a few clouds in the forecast and only a 10% chance of rain.

That will change later in the week, according to Nitz. The dry weather will stick around Tuesday and Wednesday, but the chance of precipitation will shoot up to 80% Thursday.

“This is midnight on New Year’s Eve,” he said. “As we are ringing in the new year, we are likely doing it with rain and potentially some thunderstorms.”

It’s an easy ride through metro Atlanta, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. There are no major trouble spots or hangups on interstates.
