A suspect in a Clayton County homicide was arrested in South Carolina on Tuesday after weeks on the run, authorities said.

Justice Davis, 42, was wanted on malice murder and other charges in the Aug. 12 shooting death of Tajman Ashmore, the 25-year-old friend of Davis’ ex-girlfriend.

According to Clayton County police, Ashmore was visiting the woman at the Southlake Cove Apartments in Jonesboro and confronted Davis when he discovered him standing outside. Davis and his ex-girlfriend share a son, police spokeswoman Sgt. Julia Isaac said in a news release.

“The friend attempted to stop Mr. Davis from entering the residence, but he produced a gun,” Isaac said. “An altercation ensued between the victim, Mr. Ashmore and Mr. Davis resulting in Mr. Ashmore being fatally shot in front of the juvenile.”

Ashmore was dead when police arrived at the home just before midnight. Davis was quickly identified as the suspect but was nowhere to be found, according to Isaac.

He was taken into custody Tuesday by U.S. marshals in South Carolina. On Thursday, Davis was booked into the Clayton County Jail on charges of malice murder, home invasion, aggravated assault, cruelty to children and other weapons offenses.
