Homicide detectives are investigating after a man was found dead Monday morning in southwest Atlanta’s Oakland City neighborhood.

The victim was found with a gunshot wound around 1:15 a.m. at a home in the 1000 block of Peeples Street, according to Atlanta police. He was pronounced dead by medics with Atlanta fire. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 25-year-old Stephen Maffett.

The death is the city’s 139th homicide case this year. Atlanta police investigated 157 homicides in 2020, up from 99 in 2019 and the most in more than two decades.

Monday’s deadly shooting remains under investigation. Tipsters can remain anonymous, and be eligible for rewards of up to $2,000, by contacting Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477, texting information to 274637 or visiting the Crime Stoppers website.
