The GBI is investigating after a drug suspect was accused of trying to run over a northwest Georgia police officer following a traffic stop last week.

Kerry Lamar Grier Jr., 30, of Rome, faces 10 charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, after the Friday incident in Floyd County, the GBI said in a news release. His other charges include counts of felony marijuana possession, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and several traffic citations.

Floyd County police pulled over Grier’s vehicle at an undisclosed location due to a tint violation, according to records obtained by the Rome News-Tribune. Grier tried to flee the traffic stop, nearly running over Lt. Christopher Hovers during the process, the GBI said.

Soon after, members of the Rome/Floyd Metro Drug Task Force were able to stop Grier’s vehicle and arrest him, the release said. During his arrest, officers said they found a handgun, more than an ounce of marijuana and a “quantity of cash” in his possession.

Grier and a police officer were taken to Floyd Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries after the incident, the GBI said.

When Grier was medically cleared, he was booked into the Floyd County Jail, where he remained Monday night. The News-Tribune obtained Grier’s mug shot. AJC.com has reached out to the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office to learn more about his custody.

The GBI’s investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the agency’s Calhoun office at 706-624-1424.
