Marietta police are investigating the apparent rape of a 14-year-old girl on her way home from school Tuesday.

According to police spokesman David Baldwin, the girl was waiting for a Cobb Community Transit bus on the corner of Powder Springs and Sandtown roads when an unidentified vehicle pulled up and offered her a ride.

"This was not a kidnapping or abduction," said Baldwin, noting the teen willingly got into the car.

She was taken to an unknown location, believed to be within Marietta's city limits, where the sexual assault allegedly occurred, Baldwin said.

Detectives, who spent hours interviewing the girl and her mother Tuesday afternoon, have identified a "person of interest," Baldwin said, though they aren't releasing any details about the possible suspect. They also would not disclose whether the girl knew her alleged assailant.
