6-year-old locked on Gwinnett daycare bus for 90 minutes

State officials are investigating a Gwinnett County day care center after a 6-year-old girl was left alone for more than an hour on a bus.

The girl was left alone on the bus with the Prodigy Point Early Childhood Center near Snellville last month, Channel 2 Action News is reporting.

The little girl fell asleep on the four-row bus, and awoke to find everyone else had gone, the little girl’s mother told Channel 2. When she awoke and tried to exit the bus, all of the doors were locked.

A parent spotted the girl, after she’d been on the bus for about an hour-and-a-half, and notified the daycare staff, the girl’s mother said.

Typically, the driver is required to walk the aisles of the bus, followed by someone from the daycare management, before the bus can be parked.

The state has suspended Prodigy’s bus transportation program and sent a statement to Channel 2 saying in part, “Once the 12-month transportation restriction period expires, a department-approved monitor will be utilized for a minimum period of one month to ensure Prodigy maintains compliance with rules and regulations.”

Gwinnett County police are also investigating, however no criminal charges are pending.
