Wrecks block westbound I-20

An accident with more than 25 cars has westbound Interstate 20 blocked between Panola and Wesley Chapel roads, highway officials are reporting.

The Georgia Department of Transportations is reporting two separate accidents, spokesman Bryan Gunter said.

"One of the accidents is a chain-reaction involving upwards of 25 cars," Gunter said.

Authorities are inverting westbound traffic off I-20 to Panola road, and the DOT anticipates having the highway cleared by about 6:30 p.m., he said.

DeKalb County Police aren't certain what triggered the accident that started sometime after 5 p.m., but police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said no serious injuries were being reported.

Gunter said debris on I-20 eastbound at Chapel Hill, several miles to the east, has snarled eastbound rush-hour traffic. But H.E.R.O. vehicles haven't been able to clear the road because of the westbound wrecks, he said.
