A soldier from Woodstock died in Iraq on Tuesday.

Spc. Gary L. Nelson III, 20, was killed by injuries sustained in an undisclosed incident, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday. The agency did not release details about his death, but said it was not combat-related.

"We know that they're still doing the investigation, but we don't have any information beyond that," Patrick Young, a spokesman at Fort Stewart, told the AJC. He said all military deaths are investigated.

Nelson was based at Fort Stewart and assigned to the 6th Squadron, 8th Cavalry, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division. He was on his first deployment, Young said.
