A group of Woodstock residents is working toward establishment of a city arts commission.

Susan Wright of the group addressed the Woodstock City Council last week, and said that they are interested in setting up various public arts displays around town. She said other communities in the region have shown that such art brings tourism and economic development and enhances residents‘ quality of life. She said the focus would be on visual instead of performing arts.

Wright said that the group’s first step would be to set up a public arts master plan, addressing themes, styles and placement. The group would be non-profit, raising money to install art and to pay for its upkeep.

Commissioners were presented a draft ordinance to create such a group, but it’s not known when they’ll formally consider it.
