A Douglas County sheriff’s deputy escaped serious injury early Friday when a car slammed into a patrol car during a traffic stop.

Channel 2 Action News reported that the deputy and a Douglasville police officer had stopped a car on the ramp from Chapel Hill Road to I-20 westbound when another motorist slammed into the back of one of the patrol cars.

Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Michael Stewart told the station that the motorist “failed to maintain her lane, struck a Douglasville P.D. unit, then knocked that unit into a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office unit.”

The sheriff’s deputy was knocked to the ground during the incident.

“I don’t think he was struck,” Stewart said. “It was just him trying to get out of the way caused him to fall, and he sustained minor lacerations to his right arm and complained of injury to his right knee.”

The woman who struck the police cruiser had been drinking, and officials were deciding whether to charge her with DUI, according to Channel 2.
