The woman found shot to death in a northwest Atlanta home Monday afternoon has been identified as 57-year-old Tammy Smith, police said.

The shooting happened in the 400 block of Newport Street, off Joseph E. Boone Boulevard, police told the AJC.

An officer on patrol one street over heard gunshots and watched as a man left the Newport Street home in a silver car, police said. Officers pursued him and the man, later identified as 36-year-old Gene Hendrix, hit another vehicle, police said.

Hendrix, who had a gunshot wound to his left arm, then got out of the car and ran, police said.

"The male ran about 10 yards and fell to the ground and surrendered," said Officer Kim Jones, a police spokeswoman. "The male was placed into custody at that time."

Hendrix was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, Jones said. He is charged with murder.

Smith died upon arrival at Grady, police said. She had been shot in the side.

Police have not yet determined a motive.
