A woman and three dogs were found dead Monday by Cobb County crews responding to a report of a fire at a home in Austell.

Cobb County firefighters were dispatched to the call around 8:30 p.m. Dec. 2 in the 6000 block of Wind Chase Court SW in Austell.

Crews arrived to find “evidence of a fire in a basement living area” that had been extinguished before firefighters got to the home, Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services said in a press release.

The body of an 85-year-old woman, as well as three dogs, were found inside the residence, the department added.

Cobb County fire Capt. Joseph Bryant said two family members who were not home at the time of the incident have also been displaced. Bryant also said it appears the woman may have played a role in extinguishing the fire, but that has not been determined.

“Investigators will be out at the scene tomorrow and should be able to rule on a cause,” Bryant said.

An official cause of death for the woman has not been determined, but it appears she could have died from smoke inhalation, Bryant said.

Cobb County fire said it does not suspect foul play at this time. Return to AJC.com for updates.
