Smyrna police have reopened a stretch of Windy Hill Road after deeming a “possible pipe bomb” found nearby a false alarm.

At about 2:45 p.m., the department issued an alert saying that Windy Hill Road from South Cobb Drive to San Fernando Drive had been closed. Officer Christopher Graeff said the closure was ordered after the department received a call reporting a “suspected pipe bomb” on the front porch of nearby Smyrna Pawn.

Police evacuated surrounding businesses before the Cobb County bomb squad arrived and determined the item to merely be “a piece of pipe,” Graeff said.

Windy Hill Road was reopened at about 3:30 p.m.
