Q: What was the source of Atlanta’s water before Buford Dam was built?

— B.R. Mack, Lawrenceville

A: The city does and has always gotten its water directly from the Chattahoochee River. But the source for metro Atlanta is much more complicated as the Metro Water Planning District is comprised of 15 counties and more than 90 cities, said April Ingle, executive director of the Athens-based Georgia River Network and a spokeswoman for the Georgia Water Coalition. Many cities and counties have their own utilities that provide water from their own sources. It’s also important to remember that many of these areas were rural and didn’t have or need to provide large quantities of water around the time Buford Dam was built in the ‘50s, Ingle said. She said the amount of growth in these counties over the past several decades has made it necessary to find an additional water supply.
