A water main break along Buford Highway in DeKalb County early Wednesday flooded the basement of a nearby condominium building and forced authorities to shut down a couple of lanes of the busy thoroughfare during the Wednesday morning commute.

The break occurred around 4 a.m. near the intersection of Buford Highway and North Druid Hills Road.

Luz Torres, who has lived in the Jackson Square Condominiums for seven years, said her grandchildren “woke me up telling me there was a flood”

“There was like 4 feet of water in the basement,” Torres told the AJC.

Torres said the basement is used for storage by the residents of the 12 units in the building.

“There’s a lot of stuff down there that’s flooded,” she said.

Gregory Sutton, board president of the condo’s homeowner’s association, said he was told by firefighters that there was no need to evacuate residents.

The complex has had problems in the past with flooding from nearby Peachtree Creek, Sutton said.

The northbound lanes of Buford Highway were blocked during the early stages of Wednesday’s rush hour, with northbound traffic squeezing past in the turning lane.
