A 43-year-old Jonesboro woman critically injured in a shooting involving Clayton County Sheriff Victor Hill “appears to be making good headway,” her father said Monday.
Ernest McCord said his daughter Gwenevere was scheduled to undergo more surgery Monday at Gwinnett Medical Center and could possibly be weaned off the ventilator starting Tuesday. In addition to numerous surgeries, Gwenevere McCord lost a kidney, her father said. She’s heavily sedated and unable to talk.
Gwenevere McCord was shot on May 3 while working at a model home. Police said Hill, who was at the home at the time, called 911 and told emergency operators the shooting was an accident.
Gwinnett Police charged Hill, 50, with reckless conduct, a misdemeanor. Hill turned himself into police and was released on $2,950 bond.
It is still unclear what transpired at the time of the shooting. Hill has said little about the incident. Ernest McCord said he believes it was an accident and is not angry at Hill.
The McCord family has known Hill for awhile and even worked on his campaign for sheriff. McCord said he’s waiting to hear his daughter’s side of the story.
“We keep calling it a victory day by day, ” McCord said Monday of his daughter’s condition. “(Doctors) will be closing her up today and, if there’s no complications, they’ll be able to start taking her off the ventilator Tuesday.”
The incident has drawn international attention. McCord said his family has heard from well-wishers as far away as Dubai and Germany.
“We’ve had so many prayers warriors in and out of the country,” the retired electronics technician said.
