A record number of freshmen -- more than 5,500 students -- will attend the University of Georgia when classes begin Aug. 15. Of students who graduated from a Georgia high school in 2011, one in 20 will be at UGA.

This year's freshman class is about 10 percent larger than last year's and is the university's most diverse, said Nancy McDuff, associate vice president for admissions and enrollment management. More than 1,400 freshmen are minorities -- a figure that includes more than 480 blacks and about 300 Latinos, she said.
