Two men killed in separate traffic incidents in Athens

Athens authorities Wednesday identified a homeless man and a motorcyclist killed in separate traffic incidents late Tuesday night.

The homeless man, Randall Cown, was struck and killed while crossing North Avenue just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, according to Athens-Clarke County police spokeswoman Savannah Hembree.

Witnesses told police that Cown, 55,  walked into the path of a southbound vehicle. No charges have been filed, but the incident is still under investigation, Hembree said.

About an hour earlier, Edwin D. Lovern was westbound on Hull Road when he struck a curb and lost control of his motorcycle. Lovern, 69, of Bishop, died a short time later at a local hospital, Hembree said.
