Two DeKalb officers fired over sexual misconduct
A pair of DeKalb County police officers were fired for allegedly having sex while one was supposed to be training a recruit, county officials said Friday.
Gregory Rivera and Corey Lowe-Williams were terminated after a DeKalb County police internal affairs investigation of sexual misconduct, a statement from county spokeswoman Angela Walton said.
Rivera was on duty several times when he visited an off-duty Lowe-Williams at her home, spokeswoman Sheila Edwards said.
The misconduct was reported to internal affairs in March, although county officials are uncertain how long, or how many times, Rivera had made the on-duty house calls.
On at least one occasion, Rivera made a police trainee under his charge wait in the squad car, Edwards said.
"While they were doing whatever they were doing, he left a recruit waiting for him," she said.
A third officer, Sgt. Walter West, Lowe-Williams' supervisor, also was demoted to master police officer after making what Edwards described as "inappropriate" comments to Lowe-Williams.
West allegedly made the comments after Lowe-Williams told him she wanted to break off her relationship with Rivera and asked her boss to get involved, Edwards said.
"We will not tolerate any misconduct by our police officers on or off duty," said Chief William O'Brien. "We will always be fair in investigating allegations against our officers, but if it is determined misconduct has taken place, swift and appropriate action will be taken."
CBS Atlanta Channel 46 reports that West is being investigated for sexual misconduct for spending several hours while on-duty with a woman he was video taped kissing and hugging at a Gwinnett County trailer home miles outside his jurisdiction.
