Two people died early Tuesday in a fiery collision between a tractor-trailer and a smaller vehicle in an industrial park in Gainesville.

The wreck, which involved a truck hauling dog food, happened about 1 a.m. in front of the Purina plant on Purina Drive, Gainesville police Cpl. Kevin Holbrook said.

Holbrook told the AJC that the preliminary indications were that the truck was making a right turn when the smaller vehicle, which was going in the same direction, collided with the cab of the truck at a high rate of speed, knocking the truck's fuel tank loose and setting off an explosion.

The smaller vehicle ended up under the truck, and both vehicles were engulfed in flames when police arrived.

Holbrook said investigators had not been able to determine the make  or model of the smaller vehicle.

Two people were confirmed dead in that vehicle, but their genders and ages have not been determined, Holbrook said.

The truck driver "barely made it out before the explosion," and was uninjured, Holbrook said.

At 6 a.m., the fire was still smoldering, sending thick smoke throughout much of Gainesville, he said.
