The trial for a U.S. Army veteran charged in the death of his 78-year-old grandmother is underway in DeKalb County.

Gregory Williams, 38, was arrested in July 2017 after Millicent Williams, 78, was reported missing. There were signs of a struggle, including blood, in her home, and and her car was gone.

Gregory Williams was arrested, in her car, in a Kroger parking lot and initially charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault and theft by taking. Charges were amended to malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, concealing a death and theft by taking after authorities discovered Millicent Williams’ remains.

Police are searching for Millicent William, who is missing under suspicious circumstances, DeKalb police said.

Gregory Williams is accused of forcing his way into her bedroom and attacking her with a “Rambo-style” knife, police said after his arrest.

Court and police records suggest a troubled relationship. Millicent Williams told authorities her grandson suffered from PTSD after service in the Army and refused to take his medicine.

Though she believed he'd served in Iraq, Gregory Williams was never deployed, the Army said.

A competency trial was held in May 2019 in the case after Gregory Williams' attorney argued he displayed "psychotic behavior."

Jurors found him competent for trial.
