Q: What is the meaning of the letters and numbers on the placards worn by the state Spelling Bee competitors?
-- Fae Kelley, Carrollton
A: The placards indicate whether the students were the winners and runners-up from the nine Georgia Association of Educators districts and the Georgia Independent School Association winner and runner-up, said Kevin Pearson, spokesman for the 49th annual Georgia Association of Educators State Spelling Bee. For example, a contestant with a 1-W placard was the winner from District 1. "That helps everybody keep track of who's who," he said.
Q: Whatever became of the plans to locate a Costco in the North DeKalb Mall?
-- Robert Redmond, Tucker
A: Costco has delayed those plans, said Charlie Hendon, president of Atlanta-based Hendon Properties, owner of the mall at Lawrenceville Highway and North Druid Hills Road. "We would still love to have them, but given the economy, they put that deal and several others on hold. So we don't know if and when they will come back," he said. "We would like for them to, but at the moment, there is no word that they will. I think that they have it on their radar screen as a possibility when they start back up in earnest doing new stores. But right now, there's no time frame related to that."
