The weapon used to kill Clayton County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard “Rick” Daly was stolen from a law enforcement officer, according to testimony.
Jonathan Bun is on trial on murder and other charges in Daly's 2011 slaying. In the second day of testimony Wednesday, retired Georgia Department of Corrections Officer Cicero Parks held the murder weapon and told a Clayton County jury it was the first time he'd seen it in more than two years.
“This is my weapon,” Parks said. “It’s a Glock and the serial numbers are the same.”
He said the gun was stolen from his Conyers apartment on Sept. 30, 2009, while he was on furlough but away from home.
Parks said he returned that day to find that his apartment had been burglarized, and his Glock was taken.
A federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agent, Special Agent Jeff Reed, corroborated Parks’ claim, noting that the gun had formerly been a state law enforcement issue that was reported stolen.
Bun was 17 on July 20 when he was accused of shooting Daly twice, killing the more-than-20-year deputy during an attempt to serve an arrest warrant for an armed robbery charge.
What followed the shooting that July afternoon was an hours-long manhunt in a wooded area just outside of Riverdale as police from dozens of metro Atlanta agencies responded to an “officer down” call and attempted to find Bun.
Now 18, he is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole for charges that include malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault on a peace officer and gun possession during the commission of a felony.
Testimony continues Thursday.
