The burst of summer-like heat Saturday didn't break any records, but it came close.
The high was 86 degrees, which matched the record set in 1995, said Brad Nitz, a meteorologist with Channel 2 Action News. The average high this time of year is 71 degrees.
On Sunday, the only umbrella that Atlanta Braves fans will need is a parasol for protection from the sun. The forecast is for more bright skies and a high of 87.
The warm spell should break Monday though. As as people return to work, a cold front will be moving in from the west. Nitz is giving a 70 percent chance of rain in Atlanta, but not until after the evening commute.
"We should get through the bulk of the day with actually some pretty decent weather," he said. The rain could hit metro Atlanta as late 9 p.m. or even 11 p.m., he said.
It's too soon to say if the storm will be severe, like Tuesday's drubbing was. Any weather system this time of year can pack a punch.
The jet stream hasn't retreated north over Canada yet, and that cold and fast-moving air can add energy to a storm, Nitz said, especially when it's mixing with warm humid air pushed up from the Gulf of Mexico.
