The case of a Braselton teenager accused of killing her mother with a gunshot to the head was resolved last week in juvenile court, the girl's attorney said Thursday.
The 15-year-old, whose name is withheld because she is a juvenile, allegedly admitted to police that she shot her mother, Army 1st Sgt. Karen Moore, at the family's home April 6 before leaving to pick up her boyfriend.
Defense attorney Lucas Harsh said the boyfriend had told her to pick him up by 10:30 p.m. or he would break up with her. Minors over 13 can be prosecuted for murder as adults and receive a mandatory life sentence upon conviction. Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter transferred the case to juvenile court after consulting with the girl's father and brother and reviewing a psychiatric evaluation.
Information about the resolution of Juvenile Court cases are kept under seal.
Harsh and defense co-counsel James B. McGinnis said they were pleased with the outcome.
"Juvenile Court can be an appropriate resolution for any crime, even a violent one, when there is hope for rehabilitation," Harsh said.
