A teenage driver and a motorcyclist were killed in two separate crashes in Cobb County over the weekend.
The first crash happened about 9 p.m. Friday along South Cobb Drive. Andre Cordero, 17, of Acworth, was pulling out of a driveway in the 1600 block, according to Cobb County police.
Jesse Perez, pastor of Iglesia Centro, said the teen was leaving the church’s Friday youth service at the time of the wreck, Channel 2 Action News reported.
“Sunday morning, it was so hard for me that I didn’t even know what to preach,” Perez said.
Cordero turned left into the path of a Chevrolet Trailblazer, and his Hyundai was hit on the left side, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement to parents, North Cobb High School’s principal informed the school community of Cordero’s death, Channel 2 reported.
“Counselors and the district crisis team were on hand to visit each of the classes of this student to offer them a time to talk and share their feelings,” the statement said. “Ongoing support will be available.”
His 17-year-old passenger was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries, police said. The driver of the Chevy, 38-year-old Lisa James, was also taken to Kennestone with minor injuries, according to Channel 2.
Two days later, Cobb police investigated a second deadly collision. A Harley-Davidson motorcycle and a Toyota Tacoma collided Sunday night on the East-West Connector, police said.
According to investigators, the Toyota heading to the Tramore Village Apartments turned left into the path of the oncoming Harley about 7:30 p.m.
“When the Tacoma turned left in front of the motorcycle, the front of the Harley crashed into the right side of the Toyota,” police spokesman Sgt. Wayne Delk said in a news release.
The motorcyclist, identified as 50-year-old Steven Fitzgerald of Marietta, was dead at the scene. Both the driver and a passenger in the Tacoma were taken to WellStar Cobb Hospital, the passenger with serious injuries.
No information was released on charges in either incident.
“Both of these collisions remain under investigation,” Delk said.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Cobb police at 770-499-3987.
