A 16-year-old driver has been charged with fleeing after running over and killing a 9-year-old girl, according to Gwinnett County police.

Police said Gracelle Sanders of Lawrenceville was killed after stepping onto Club Drive in unincorporated Duluth Tuesday night and into the path of a black 2001 Mazda Tribute.

They say the driver, who was not named, kept going and stopped at a convenience store at Beaver Ruin Road and Steve Reynolds Boulevard to try to clean the front of the SUV. Police said the driver eventually called the police to file a false accident report.

The Lawrenceville teenager was in a juvenile detention center Wednesday on charges of  hit and run with serious injury or death,  first-degree vehicular homicide,  filing a false report of a crime, tampering with evidence and violation of drivers license restrictions.
