Teen accused in bleach assault remains in jail

A Gwinnett County judge set bond Saturday for the 17-year-old accused of hitting a younger student in the face with a bleach-filled balloon.

But Juan Carlos Flores remains in jail due to a possible immigration violation, according to jail records.

Flores, a Meadowcreek High School student, has been charged with aggravated battery for throwing the balloon at 14-year-old Miguel Mesa on the last day of school. Flores was one of four students in a van when the incident took place, but he is the only one being charged as an adult, due to his age.

Three other teenagers remain in the youth detention center.

Mesa, who just completed seventh grade at Lilburn Middle School, suffered serious eye injuries when he was hit in the face with the balloon as he walked home from school. Doctors have not yet determined if Mesa suffered permanent damage.

The four teenagers accused in the prank have told Lilburn police they only wanted to damage clothing, and did not intend to cause physical harm.
