A child molestation suspect who vowed he wasn’t going back to north Georgia to face charges was killed in Texas this week after pulling a gun on U.S. Marshals during a standoff.

Robert Nabors, 70, was accused of molesting a friend’s child while living with the family in Cedartown between 2005 and 2006.

The girl, now 12, reported the assaults in June of this year, and a warrant was issued for Nabors' arrest. The suspect, who was still in the area, then fled back to Texas, according to Detective Joe Weldon of the Polk County Police Department.

Polk County authorities asked U.S. Marshals to join in the manhunt, and Nabors was tracked to a house in Fort Worth, Texas, according to U.S. Marshals spokesman Alex Camacho in Atlanta.

Camacho said that when marshals approached the Fort Worth home Tuesday evening, Nabors had a warning for them.

“He said he was not going back to Georgia,” the spokesman said. He said Nabors then barricaded himself inside the house. Authorities surrounded the house and while a S.W.A.T. team was being called, Nabors re-emerged in the back yard with a gun and pointed it at officers, Camacho said. He was then shot several times and died at the scene.

“It’s a little unfortunate because the victim doesn’t get total closure,” said Weldon, the Polk detective who investigated the case. “She still has to live with this.”
