A 17-year-old female student at Grady High School suffered a gunshot wound to the leg Wednesday morning in what police called an accidental shooting.

The incident occurred around 9:40 a.m. in the parking lot of the Atlanta school, located near the intersection of 10th Street and Monroe Drive.

The student accidentally shot herself in the thigh, police spokesman Carlos Campos said. The gun belonged to the girl, said Campos, who did not know if she had the gun inside the school at any point. She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition, he said.

Campos said police had recovered the gun.
